Choosing a Shampoo
Healthy Hair Routine
WHY USE 100% NATURAL SHAMPOO BARS
All of our shampoo bars are very gentle and moisturising compared to commercial shampoo. Within our shampoo range, some are even more gentle or moisturising than others.
The recommendation below is based on the ingredients used in each shampoo bar, and on actual customer feedback. Your hair or scalp may be different from the “average” hair or scalp, so the recommendation may not suit you. In that case, try a Healthy Hair Starter Kit which includes shampoos, conditioner and rinse you need for your new natural haircare routine.
The recommendation below is based on several categories: scalp, hair texture, hair thickness, colour. Please use cross reference based on all categories.
There is also a recommendation for specific conditions. Although our products are not medicated, they have helped many customers with problematic scalps. Based on their feedback, the last recommendation is for special conditions.
Please choose your products using the filter below and then peruse the ‘Using Our Healthy Haircare Products‘ resource for best results with your products.
THE BEAUTY & THE BEES’ HAIR WASHING SYSTEM
The best way to use the shampoo/conditioner/ACV rinse:
- Shampoo
*Wet your hair with warm water
*Wet your hands with warm water, lather up
*Use the lather to clean your hair & scalp, using the pads of your fingers (not fingernails) to massage the scalp
*Do not get the lather in your eyes as it will sting
*Rinse well with warm water
- Conditioner
*Rub the conditioner bar lightly in your wet hands-the conditioner bar does not lather
*Run your hands through your hair
*Rinse well with warm water
Tip: if you have thick/ lots of hair, you may need to rub the conditioner bar directly on your hair
if you have fine hair, just use a little bit at the ends
- Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Rinse
*Mix 2 tablespoons of ACV in 1 liter of warm water
*Pour slowly over your head, work it through the hair and scalp
*This is your final rinse-do not rinse again
Tip: if you have fine hair, try 1 tablespoon of ACV in 1 liter of warm water
If you have thick/lots of hair, you may need to use 3 tablespoons of ACV in 1 liter of warm water
For best results, use steps 1+2+ 3
Otherwise, you can use steps 1+2, or 1+3
FAQ’s
*How long is the adjustment period?
**most people like what Beauty & the Bees shampoo bar does for their hair and scalp after one or two washes. However, for some people, it may take several washes to get used to Beauty & the Bees natural shampoo bar because:
***it lathers well but it doesn’t foam up: they don’t contain any detergents such as SLS, SLES
** *the hair and scalp will not be squeaky clean: no detergents mean that the shampoo bar does not strip your scalp and hair of their natural oils
*Your shampoo leaves my hair limp and greasy
**with all our products, a little bit goes a long way. Do not rub hard directly on the hair.
Please follow the best way to use the shampoo/conditioner bar above
*I may have product build up (from commercial shampoo/conditioner/styling products)
**use diluted baking soda rinse (2 tablespoons in 1 liter of warm water) to thoroughly rinse hair and scalp (massage onto hair and scalp, leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse well with warm water) first to remove product build up, then wash hair with Beauty and the Bees shampoo bar of your choice following the best way above
**depending on the build-up, you may need to repeat this (for a few times) before you wash your hair to completely remove product build up
*I have hard water (high mineral content)
**unlike detergent-containing commercial shampoo, natural shampoo can be difficult to rinse out with hard water, and can leave hair feeling waxy, limp, oily
*the best solution is to install a water softener, but it is expensive
*some water filters only remove chlorine, but not the minerals
*ensure that you use the ACV Rinse (step 3 above) as your final rinse
*once per month you may need to use the baking soda rinse (2 tablespoons in 1 liter of warm water) as a cleansing rinse to rid of build-up by massaging it onto scalp and hair, and leave it for a few minutes before rinsing well with warm water
*Can I use the shampoo bar as a body soap?
**yes
*What’s the pH of your shampoo bar?
**in 23 years of making soap and shampoo bars, we’ve perfected our formulas, so we don’t measure the pH.
By nature, all natural soap and shampoo bars are alkaline (pH>7).
We do not add chemicals to make our soap and shampoo bars “pH balanced” (in marketing term) as those chemicals can harm our skin.
What is important to know:
*there is no leftover lye in our soap and shampoo bars lesser quality soap/shampoo bars may have leftover lye (free alkali), making it more alkaline
*our soap and shampoo bars are superfatted, meaning that we add more nourishing (and expensive) plant oils than needed in the process, making the soap and shampoo bars more emollient and moisturising
*our soap and shampoo bars are extra gentle you can feel the difference even after one wash
