Apple Cider Vinegar is a natural wholefood that seems to be good for everything.
Improving digestion and losing weight. Cleaning benchtops and dressing salads. Shrivelling warts and making you immortal. What can’t this tangy condiment do?
Today we want to share what it can do for your hair – which is a lot. And better still, we have a really delightful way that you can apply it.
First up, what is Apple Cider Vinegar?
Apple Cider Vinegar (or ACV) is made from crushed apples fermented in water. Wild yeasts convert the sugars in the apple juice into alcohol, then bacteria turn that alcohol into vinegar.
You end up with a lip-smackingly zingy liquid that bubbles with life.
Why is ACV majorly great for your mane?
People have been using ACV for hundreds of years to correct hair and scalp dramas – even before they knew exactly how it worked. Thanks to science (cheers, science!) now we know.
It clarifies build up + removes environmental toxins.
Is there anything more frustrating than getting out of the shower after washing your hair and it’s still sticky, greasy, dull and unmanageable? That’s the feeling of build up – either from hard water mineral deposits, styling products, synthetic shampoos or all three. ACV, with its natural apple enzymes and acetic acid, provides an instant detox for your hair and scalp. It dissolves pollutants, silicon residue and stodgy gunk to reveal your hair’s true brilliance – bright, shiny, soft and bouncy.
It balances pH + seals the cuticle.
ACV is acidic, and that’s not a bad thing. Your hair and scalp love acidity because it smooths and seals the cuticle. Thanks to ACV’s pH-lowering effect, the surface of your follicles lie flat which results in beautifully strong and shiny hair that’s free from tangles and easy to style. On the other hand, an alkaline pH causes the hair to become rough and porous, leaving it prone to frizziness and breakages. (Most commercial shampoos and hair products skew towards alkaline, by the way.)
It fights off fungus that causes dandruff, flakes + itchiness.
Further to the acidity thing, ACV creates an environment that’s hostile to bad fungus and bacteria – the ones that perpetuate scalp inflammation and dandruff. Not only does ACV topically kill off these microscopic villains, it also has healing and exfoliating factors like alpha-hydroxy acid that clean up the mess and promote skin regeneration. Also, because ACV is a raw and living thing (well, the kind of ACV we use) it’s full of enzymes that dissolve gunk, allowing your hair and scalp to breathe.
It reduces hair loss + promotes growth.
Your scalp is basically your hair’s soil. When the scalp is nourished and happy, hair grows thick and lush like a jungle. By dissolving scalp debris, correcting pH, busting fungus and stimulating the growth of healthy new skin on your scalp, ACV creates the right conditions for strong, healthy follicles to sprout.
It’s a natural colour brightener.
Because ACV dissolves mineral deposits, silicone and grime, it lightens the load on your hair leaving it bright and soft and shiny. It’s a natural alternative to harsh treatments that can make your hair dry or a funny colour.
Want to give it a whirl? Here’s our favourite way to ACV.
Some folks simply dilute ACV in water and pour it over their head. Simple. Functional. Salad-y.
However, it can be a little harsh on its own, not to mention messy.
Because we love hair alchemy and herbal synergy, we created Apple Cider Vinegar Hair & Scalp Saviour Gel.
It’s based on organic, award-winning ACV from a family of orchardists in the Huon Valley. Very strong stuff.
So we combined it with Tasmanian Leatherwood honey – the most glorious natural cleanser, moisturiser and scalp healing agent. It gets rid of tangles and shines your hair like nothing else (and is also responsible for the delicious gooeyness of this product; it clings to the hair shaft and goes down deep).
Lastly, we added our favourite Tassie-grown herbs like horsetail, comfrey, nettle, calendula and licorice for a buffet of special nutrients, growth factors, antioxidants and regenerating properties.
We wanted this gel to be a complete hair treatment, something that not only detoxes and softens in one wash but also starts a positive growth cycle of strong, thick, healthy hair. And you know what? We think we nailed it!
Who’s it good for?
If your hair is feeling clogged-up, greased-out, flat, itchy, frizzy or dull, our Hair & Scalp Saviour Gel can help.
With its cooling clingy gel and apple acids and enzymes, it works deeply into the scalp and hair shaft to dissolve gunk and reveal your spunkiest self.
Result: Smooth, swishable, just-left-the-salon hair.
